Nighttime view of La Cité from the second-floor apartment’s balcony

I’m excited to share that we now have two spacious, private apartments for rent in Carcassonne, in our home! It’s just a 10-minute walk to the medieval walled city (La Cité), shops, and 50+ restaurants, and there’s ample free street parking right next to the apartments. One apartment has a stunning view of La Cité from its private balcony and salon. And the neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful. Enjoy a comfortable, relaxing stay as you get to know the city of Carcassonne!

I’ll include links to our AirBnB listings at the end of this post.

Second floor (Deuxième étage) Apartment

In this spectacular view of La Cité, you can actually see 26 of Carcassonne’s 52 towers. The apartment is spacious (approx. 900 square feet), with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a living/dining room, a private bath, and 10-foot ceilings. This classic apartment is on the second floor of our 90-year-old home and is completely private.

You’ll share the front door with Jeff and me but your apartment is completely private. There is a minimum rental of two nights (longer rentals are welcome!), and you can choose to rent the apartment with just one bedroom or with both bedrooms.

Garden Level Apartment

The second of our two apartments for rent in Carcassonne offers the perfect combination: a quiet neighborhood location and a 10-minute walk to everything. It has a garden view, a private entrance, one bedroom, and is spacious (about 800 square feet). If you’re arriving by train or plane, it’s just 1.5 km from Carcassonne’s train station and 5 km from Carcassonne’s airport. The apartment is completely new – we finished construction in March 2020. The duration of rentals can be one night through several months.

  • Vibeke Arentz says:

Thank you so very much, Maila! Especially coming from you and “Dad”, this means so very much. I’m so glad you saw it when it was a work in progress (which it ALWAYS will be!) Yes, your room is waiting for you whenever you can return – we can’t wait to see you again. Just love you so much! Love from Jeff and me!

  • Karen says:

Wonderful, Vibeke! I am so impressed. When I wrote to you a few years ago, you had said you were remodeling some rooms. They look great. I would love to come and stay when we can travel once again to Europe. I don’t know if that will be later this year or early next year. I live in Southern California.

    • Vibeke Arentz says:

Thank you so much, Karen, this is so sweet of you! You will be very welcome whenever the world opens up again. Where in Southern California do you live?

  • Karen says:

Hi Vibeke, I live in Sherman Oaks, about 10 miles north west of L.A. Earlier this year, I was hoping to make a trip to the south of France. I had actually signed up for a seminar to obtain information about renting or buying property in France. Because of the lockdown, I won’t be going. My last visit to the south of France and Paris was in 2014. I enjoy reading all your blogs and look forward to meeting you.

  • Vibeke Arentz says:

Hi again Karen, my husband Jeff grew up in San Diego and lived in the SF Bay Area for 40 years, another Californian! We would be happy to meet you here and share all that we’ve learned about moving and living here – there’s so much to learn and know! In case you’re interested, and haven’t already seen it, the Wall Street Journal published an article about Jeff and me moving here. If you would like to see it, feel free to send me your email address, I’ll be happy to send the article to you. No worries if it’s not of interest! Looking forward to seeing you as soon as is possible! Vibeke and Jeff

  • Karen says:

Hi Vibeke, no problem about the name. LOL
Yes, I would love to meet you two and learn about your moving experience. I first heard about you and your husband from an article I read in a San Luis Obispo newspaper that I found when I was staying in a hotel in SLO–I can’t remember if it was last year or 2018. I wrote to you then and have been following your blog ever since. I am interested in the article from the WSJ, so please send it at your convenience. Yes, I am looking forward to meeting you as well! My email address: penmarkg@aol.com. Thank you!

  • Karen Fox says:

    Dear Vibeke,
I am so thrilled for you and I get excited thinking about making new plans to visit…some day, hopefully soon. You and Jeff have done such a wonderful job of renovating and documenting all the changes. I am intrigued with the history of Carcassonne and I look forward to learning and hearing more stories! Love to both of you!

    • Vibeke Arentz says:

Dear Karen, Thank you so very very much! You, my dear friend of 31+ years, have impeccable taste, so to hear your positive comments about our apartments means the world to me! The history here is absolutely amazing. Jeff and I, as you know, have lived here for almost two years, and we’re still just scratching the surface of Carcassonne’s history. And I’ll find the perfect ways to share our city’s history with you when you’re here! Can’t wait for your visit – whenever that is, my dear friend. Just love you!

  • Jane Bowden says:

    Hi Vibeke and Jeff,
It looks absolutely fabulous! I am an old friend of Jeff’s and we all met once in Nevada City. I particularly love the second floor apartment with views. Hopefully with travel restrictions lifted in the US in the next year, I would love to visit. Beautiful job on the renovations. Hope to see you both sometime! It looks amazing.
    Sincerely, Jane Bowden

    • Vibeke Arentz says:

      Bonjour, Jane!
So nice to hear from you, and thank you so much for your compliments. Yes, I have wonderful memories of our get-together/conversation in Nevada City. Jeff and I are very happy that the heavy lifting is over! Three will always of course be smaller projects, but it’s nice to have completed the big renovation. We’ve had several paying guests, too! Four different groups so far in August, for a total of 21 nights. Given that this is such a strange year, I am very happy with that. We would LOVE for you to visit. Jeff’s probably told you that Carcassonne makes a wonderful home base for an incredible variety of adventures – the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, the many beautiful towns and Roman history in Provence, incredible wine country…I could go on and on. It would be absolutely wonderful to see you! Vibeke and Jeff

  • Karen Stedman says:

    Bonjour Vibeke,
I’ve written to you before as you may recall. I’m glad you’ve have guests in August. I do want to visit and stay at your place next year. I just hope to be able to travel outside of the U.S. (California). Please keep us all posted about what you are doing and what it’s like in France now. I do hope all is going well for you. My best.

    • Vibeke Arentz says:

Bonsoir, Karen, it’s so nice to hear from you! Yes, August has been very busy with renters, and we are so happy to share our home and our town with others! Everyone has been so kind and nice, and I’ve been happy to host them here in our home! Our rental traffic may slow down in September, and then I hope to have the time to write some more blog posts. But suffice it to say that life here is so very rewarding every day, with so many fun activities with friends, helping our renters, enjoying the farmer’s market, and so much more – living here is a daily delight. We so look forward to meeting you here in Carcassonne in 2021 (you will be so welcome!) and I do hope you will stay in touch! Most kind regards, Vibeke

  • Karen Stedman says:

Bonjour, Vibeke, I’m so happy to hear you say that “living here is a daily delight.” How wonderful. I’m trying to make the best of things here–a challenging time for everyone, with all that’s going on. In any case, I look forward to exploring your lifestyle when I visit–perhaps getting involved with new friends and helping out in the community, if possible. I’d like to visit some beautiful sites near you. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer and that you continue to find delights in each day. Yes, I will stay in touch. Best to you, Karen

Wonderful digs. all that hard work paid off. The vision necessary
    is a gift.

  • adrianne cady says:

Jeff & Vibeke…..Bravo to you both for the vision and hard work that went into creating such a lovely space. I have followed the blog and have seen how hard you both have worked. I am already inquiring about three days during the quatorze juillet feu d’artifice in Carcasonne. I have been there to see it in 2004 when my husband turned 60 (july 14th is his birthday). Friends of our will be taking a sabbatical April to August this yr and will be spending it in France, starting in Montpellier and then travelling. I would like to have them stay a few nights at your one bedroom apt to experience July 14th. I can imagine how popular that time is. Will you send me a private message to my e-mail adriannecady@aol.com and give me the possibility of its availability and the cost per night. I have not broached this subject with them as I was not sure of its availability.
Merci beaucoup. (hoping to spend my husband 80th birthday there in 2024).
